What the tool room does

Build, modify and maintain molds

A mold is a steel or aluminum block machined with the shape of your part. It has to be built to the part, changed when the part changes, and kept in shape over hundreds of thousands of cycles. Our toolmakers do all three on site in Noblesville.

Because the tool room is on site, a mold that needs a change does not have to ship to an outside shop. Our toolmakers handle new projects as well as mold changes, and we offer an effective maintenance service that includes regular maintenance.

Kinds of tool

The right tool for the volume

We build appropriate tools for the volume required, from a single cavity tool for a new part to a high-volume multi-cavity tool once the part is proven. A new mold typically takes about 90 days from the purchase order.

The tool decides how many parts come off each cycle, so it follows the annual quantity. A single cavity tool suits a new part or a lower volume; a multi-cavity tool makes sense once a part runs in high volume, because it makes several parts every cycle.

  • Single cavity. One part per cycle. The usual start for a new part or a lower volume.
  • Family tool. Several different parts of one product in the same mold, molded together.
  • Multi cavity. Several copies of the same part per cycle, for higher volume.

The part and mold design page covers the steps before the first production mold.

Machines

Machines in the tool room

We have high quality CNC mills, EDM, wire, manual mills, manual lathes, surface grinders, radial drill presses, and overhead cranes to handle both small and large molds. Our CNC milling centers are Haas machines, run with Mastercam from CAD data.

We also have milling, turning, welding, drilling, tapping, coating and heat treating capabilities. The tool room sits under a 3-ton bridge crane, and the production floor's overhead cranes, rated to 10 tons, set the large molds in the machines.

The tool room is not only for our own molds. We are open to quoting outside machining work too, so describe the job on the quote form.

Questions

Questions about molds and tooling

All buyer questions and the mold transfer guide.

Who maintains and repairs the mold?

Our own toolmakers. We offer an effective maintenance service that includes regular maintenance, and we modify molds in the same tool room.

How many parts will a mold make?

We have run more than 300,000 parts off a single cavity tool. A mold's life depends on the material, the mold and how it is maintained.
